By now, you will know that we have a mild obsession with The Qwarks, having covered their awesome single, You Are Not Fans (You Are Our Friends) and their conceptual stream of consciousness, Dog Ate My Homework, so we were ecstatic to hear their brand new single, Influencer.
Drawing us straight in with psychedelic guitar licks and the sonic experience that we have learnt to love and expect from The Qwarks, the trio sing the title of the track atmospherically.
The opus expands with thought-provoking lyrics and the unapologetic cerebral nature that is synonymous with the band, as they make a commentary on the influencer economy.
Influencer marks the fourth single released from The Qwarks‘s up and coming second album, LET’S GO, LET’S GROW!, which is set for release on 14 December 2022. The song touches upon the theme of “algorithmic control where everyone has become an advert” with the band’s signature comedic funk-rock edge.
We appreciate the poetic nuance, charismatic delivery and overall subversive vibe that has become a unique selling point for the rising trio, consisting of Phil Johnstone on guitars and vocals, Simon Young on bass and Nick Flowers on drums.
We learn that two of the main themes that run through The Qwarks‘s new album are “the end of Western civilisation” and “how utterly amusing much of the frenetic activity and endless spectacle that occurs at this moment is when you reflect on it”.
They tell us “It’s about laughing together at a quite extraordinary epochal moment in which we dwell where the logics of the machine permeate down to control our very fingertips; where databases relentlessly categorise; and robots try and frenetically place you in boxes pre-prepared by the machine in an endless spiral of enhancing consumer freedoms.”
We are obsessed with the authentic depth that The Qwarks share and their intention to share laughter and comedy with their sonic and video universe. We have added Influencer to our New Music Spotlight playlist, whilst we continue to stream the wider discography from the band, including Throne of Your Grace and Dog Ate My Homework!
Top tip from the Qwarks: Have influence in the real world today by making a fool of yourself in public…responsibly! See our video for guidance. It’s liberating! It’s Jouissance!
