Setting the tone with immersive vocal textures, guitar and intricate drums, Gallowayyys opens his new single OLLIE OFF A MXLLY with atmospheric vocals and intrigue, and we are hypnotized.
OLLIE OFF A MXLLY expands into a luscious and emotive opus which is centered on the “anxieties, regrets and mania [that] a person experiences when coping through a drawn out break-up.”
The familiar subject matter is a territory that Gallowayyys discusses with depth and poetic nuance. We appreciate the dynamism and passion that the Los Angeles based artist shares with his energy.
We learn that “from the introduction, the rhythm section and lyrics evolve to reflect the different stages in the break-up process; transitioning between internal monologues to outward expressions of pain and regret.”
Gallowayyys is the solo project of Blake Alexander, a singer-songwriter, vocalist, producer and audio engineer. He started his career recording demos as an undergrad in college. He attended UNT in Denton, TX. USA. There he developed his eclectic visuals and musical style while building his relationships with bands, artist, and industry professionals.
He cites Basquiat, Jimi Hendrix, Prince and Bjork, as well as the underground punk pop scene in the UK, and the indie scene in Los Angeles, as inspirations, although it is clear that Gallowayyys is creating a universe of his own.
Expanding on the intention of OLLIE OFF A MXLLY, Gallowayyys confesses, “[It] is the first in a series of songs unpacking the experiences that shaped my world view. My goal is to build a community where supporters and fans can feel comfortable opening up about the events that define a person and justify their motives.” He adds, “I think the world is primed for a new renaissance and I believe songs like OLLIE OFF A MXLLY exist to shift the paradigms.
We love Gallowayyys‘s divergent flow, the percussive detailing and harmonies within the opus and the authenticity that he shares. We also noticed the cute nod to Charli XCX and Icona Pop‘s I Love It, which we stan! We have added OLLIE OFF A MXLLY to our New Music Spotlight playlist, whilst we continue to stream Gallowayyys‘s wider discography including CHAIN SMOKER.
