Setting the tone with a pulsing beat, percussive detailing and astral vocal add libs, Malibu Wild open their single, Over with atmospheric vocals and the situational lyrics, “I know that look in your eye, the one about to turn and say goodbye, say goodbye, I know that walk out the door, when you leave, tell me you can’t come back no more, come back no more…”
The opus expands into an immersive indie pop soundscape with a story about “the end of love, the end of a relationship, the feelings you get knowing there is no where else to go and you’re both spinning your wheels.”
We appreciate the poetic nuance of the songwriting, and are hypnotized by the dimensional elements of production that also take us on somewhat of a transcendental journey in juxtaposition of the emotive subject matter.
Malibu Wild confess that “sometimes letting go is not only easier than holding on, but best for everyone”. The Cincinnati based duo blend their identifiable “Trop Pop” energy with their Midwest Pop Punk roots to create a unique tapestry. They cite LANY, Kygo, The 1975, Coldplay as influences, although it is clear that Malibu Wild are creating a sonic universe of their own.
They leave us with their intention as Malibu Wild tell us, “Over is a song for anyone who feels trapped in a relationship they can’t continue. A song to tell you, its okay to be free from that weight.”
We love the authenticity and vulnerability that the duo create with and have added Over to our New Music Spotlight playlist, whilst we stream Malibu Wild‘s wider discography including Get Away and 3am.
