We recently wrote about IRYS for her sultry, immersive and hypnotizing single, Weirdo, which we are still obsessed with, so we were really excited to experience her new release, Riot!
Establishing the mood with a boundless, ascending synth which explodes into the body of the opus, IRYS opens Riot with the poignant and introspective lyrics, “Restless, I’m a mess, have scars on my skin, that you trespassed, don’t wanna be your enemy, off all your faces, what did I see?”
We are enthralled by IRYS‘ delivery and the nuanced texture of her vocals which feel futuristic and evocative. Riot expands into a dark-electro synth-pop soundscape created by IRYS herself, who is a Berlin-based singer, songwriter, and producer.
Speaking on Riot, IRYS confesses, “Riot, for me, stands for a state of emotional chaos that can only be understood in retrospect. I’m looking back on a traumatizing situation and trying to make sense of it, to sort it into my timeline so that I don’t need to ruminate on it anymore!”
Lyrical highlights include the wise and conscious, “I need a time-out to live the moment”, and the empowering “Gimme more, oh, how you hate it, cause I will run the show…”
We appreciate the authenticity and fierce yet subversive energy that IRYS shares with her artistry. It is no surprise that the rising star has since been compared to Grimes, Charli XCX, Tove Lo and Lana Del Rey, as they would certainly share an audience. However, it is clear that IRYS is creating a dimension of her own, fusing the sonic rawness of the Berlin underground with effortlessly catchy hooks.
The fact that she IRYS is self-produced really showcases the future of music. She is a pioneering example of what it takes to be a well rounded and self-created pop star.
We have added Riot to our New Music Spotlight playlist, whilst we continue to stream IRYS‘s discography including Weirdo and River.
