We recently featured Monroe Moon for their inspiring ode to manifest freedom with their single, WAR, so we were thrilled to hear that they just released their latest offering, New Utopia.
Establishing the mood with an intricate pulsing beat fused with strummed acoustic guitar, synth details and emotive keys, we are already immersed with the soundscape of New Utopia.
Opening with the situational and conceptual lyrics, “Sinking like a stone, into the blue beyond, got lost in the moments recalled with you…”, Monroe Moon reminisce as the song expands into a trip-hop meets dream pop vibe.
We appreciate the cinematic nature of the song and singer Bunny Monroe‘s vocal timbre. The chord progressions are out of this world, and take us on an emotive and atmospheric journey. Backing vocals are provided by lyricist Warren Malkin, whilst Theo Malkin plays guitar.
Monroe Moon confess that New Utopia touches on the subject of “When you lose someone to ideas instead of to another lover”, as they sing “another day when all you do is give it away,,, in the New Utopia…”
We learn the romantic story that Theo met Bunny in Grand Rapids in March 2010. He flew back to England the next day and sold his home and all his belongings, flew himself and Bunny to NYC to elope the first of that June. `They started creating music together ten years later and writer. Warren is Theo’s sibling.
The conscious trio channel their passion and authentic energy into New Utopia, and we are grateful for their efforts and the sonic landscape of the opus which we have had on repeat.
The Smiths, Stone Roses, Chopin and Beck are who Monroe Moon cite as influences, which we can feel coming through in New Utopia, although there is no doubt that the composition is both timeless and unique in its own right.
We have added New Utopia to our New Music Spotlight playlist, whilst we continue to stream Monroe Moon‘s wider discography including WAR and Breath(e).
