Setting the tone with an enigmatic and celestial synth, before we experience textured and immersive keys and guitar with glitched details, Skylar Eclipse teases her debut single Seventeen with intrigue and atmosphere.
Opening with the lyrics, “Every now and then I’m feeling Seventeen, sitting in the back she’s smoking Evergreens…”, Seventeen expands into an alternative pop soundscape, written from the perspective of a young adult faced with the struggle of leaving their adolescence behind.
Speaking on her vision for the song, Skylar Eclipse tells us, “After gaining a bit of traction on TikTok, I decided it was time to release my first song.”
She adds with optimism, depth and nuance, “Seventeen has the potential to be a hit this summer. The contradictory mix of sad and emotional lyrics and a warm, upbeat instrumental and melody symbolizes the mix of emotions one feels as they enter into adulthood. A time that is not only exciting and full of possibility, but ultimately frightening and lonely. A relatable tale with a spin on style and delivery.”
Skylar was inspired to write Seventeen after reminiscing on her childhood, particularly a summer of which she was 17 years old. Growing up with an absent father and drug addicted mother, Skylar was depressed throughout her teens and early childhood. However, she was able to make the best of her youth and often looks back at the good times she experienced when she was 17.
Around the same time that the song was being produced and recorded, Skylar had a series of synchronicities, continuously running into old friends and situations that reminded her of the summer when she was 17 years old. We love this, and it certainly helps demonstrate the authentic and universal connection to her artistry.
Skylar cites various influences for her work including classic and modern rock bands including The Red Hot Chili Peppers, Fleetwood Mac, No Doubt and Sublime, artists like Dido, Kid Cudi, and Hippie Sabotage, and rave/EDM culture, finding value in principles that ravers and EDM lovers promote (PLUR: Peace, Love, Unity, Respect), although it is clear that the rising artist from Los Angeles is creating a universe of her own.
We appreciate Skylar‘s sound and emotive backstory and have added Seventeen to our New Music Spotlight playlist, whilst we anticipate new releases from the rising star!
