Setting the tone with a hybrid jazz meets trip-hop energy featuring synth keys and textured percussion, Connor Terrones opens What Can I Do? with the lyrics, “What Can I Do if he can’t keep doubting, What Can I Do if he keep on pushing me away?“
The opus expands into a psychedelia tinged groovy R&B, neo-soul joint, as our protagonist sings about his introspections with regards to a flawed relationship.
What Can I Do? was co-written with Connor’s dear friend Julian Cary, and dives into the subject of gaslighting and emotional abuse. Connor Terrones confesses, “The song is rooted in the feelings you get when you’re being taken advantage of. It reflects on the experience of being used and the process of breaking free from manipulation.”
We appreciate the authentic energy that Connor shares with the composition, both in sound and his frank and self-aware lyricism. We love the genre-expansive soundscape of the track, and Connor’s varied flow plus his iconic layered vocals which are truly out of this world!
Connor Terrones has been a sideman for many Colorado acts throughout the years, and is now finally putting out his own music. Some of the bands Connor has previously played with include: Moonglade, Kaitlyn Williams, Hunter James & The Titanic, French Cuffs, Bad Britton, The Whimsy of Things, Ghost Tapes, and Brothers of Brass.
“You can’t have my spirit, my soul…” is a particularly assertive lyrical highlight, and the rap verse along with cosmic synth risers helps to further dimensionalize the track.
We have added What Can I Do? to our New Music Spotlight playlist, whilst we anticipate further releases from the rising star!
