Setting the tone with a refined pulsating bass-line, Tralala open their double release with Winded. The song expands with the lyrics, “Got Winded, nearly blew me away, got Winded today…”
We are immediately obsessed with the vocal delivery which is enigmatic and resonates with a post-punk meets alternative rock energy. Evolving with psychedelic detailing, Winded touches upon themes of the human condition and introspection as Tralala question, “What does it mean to me today?” We particularly love the piano solo which further dimensionalizes the track.
Next up is What’s the Point which further cements the ongoing theme of introspection. We are obsessed with the 90s style guitar and minor chord progressions that give us a new wave hybrid energy as the duo sings about escapism, realisations and fear. The synth-strings help to bring the mystery of the track to life and we adore the percussive elements.
Fans of Radiohead, Interpol, Bowie and Depeche Mode will definitely be able to connect with Tralala, although it is clear that the English/American rock duo based in San Francisco and Atlanta are creating a universe of their own.
Drew Price and Chris Trewin met in San Francisco in 2010, but only started collaborating on what would become Tralala in April of 2020.
Their early demos got the attention of James Doviak (Johnny Marr’s producer and bandmate), who is now handling the final mixing of their songs and acting as a mentor as they work on their debut album, which is slated for an early 2023 release.
Winded is the lead single for their debut album, and the rising duo decided to add album track What’s the Point to the release as they just completed it and felt like both tracks together represent their best work to date.
We love the direction that Tralala are taking and have added both songs to our New Music Spotlight playlist, whilst we also explore their wider discography!
