Setting the tone with industrial and divergent melodic notes, percussive detailing and atmospheric add libs stating the name of the opus, Canek opens his new single, SEXXXsorship with the provocative, situational lyrics, “Ah, sexxxsorship is surrounding me, want to let it slip, for all the world to see, all the things I did to you, only if you want me to, mmmmm it’s about love, mmmm, what happens behind closed doors, it’s about lust…”
SEXXXsorship expands with an alternative pop meets 80s hybrid frequency with pitched vocals, a luscious synthscape and sensual, subversive lyricism. The song is the first single from singer-songwriter Canek‘s upcoming album, due for release later this year.
SEXXXsorship comes with a red-tinted music video featuring Canek and two of his muses engaging in intimate moments with a hypnotizing performance from the rising artist.
We appreciate the unabashed nature of Canek‘s artistry, which is much needed in a time when the LGBTQ+ community is facing oppression. The song deals with the unfortunate shame that it’s still attached to sex and queer liberation.
Speaking on his artistry, Canek confesses, “SEXXXsorship (sex + censorship) talks about disapproval, judgment from others when talking about things that are unfortunately still considered taboo like sex. People prefer you to be silenced, so I obey and don’t finish my sentences. I hum, I moan but I don’t say what is on my mind. I hope one day I’ll be free enough to just say whatever comes to mind.”
SEXXXsorship is produced by Giandomenico Italiano, written and composed by Canek, and the visual is directed by Baptiste Charruyer.
Canek is a Franco-Mexican singer-songwriter, with an overwhelming passion for pop and classical music. Since the early age of thirteen, he has participated in international tours with his French high school choir. He is also part of the baroque duet Anima Anticua and has engaged in numerous plays and musicals such as The Portrait of Dorian Gray.
After finishing a Bachelor of Arts in musicology (France), Canek wanted to push his creativity in pop music outside of the aesthetics, and sometimes close-minded norms of classical music.
Elaborating on the music video, which is provocative but still YouTube friendly, the rising artist comments, “[It’s] straight forward, no strings attached, just people enjoying themselves… nothing shocking or taboo about that. Let’s normalize those feelings and needs without censorship or should I say SEXXXsorship”.
We appreciate the activism that comes with Canek‘s artistry and have added SEXXXsorship to our New Music Spotlight, whilst we explore his wider discography including Rumours, Rumours and GOOVIN’.
