Establishing the mood with a vibrant guitar melody fused into intricate drums, Indigo Out opens his single, Just What Is with atmospheric vocals the situational lyrics, “Waiting for things to change, no point in fighting, call it fate, it’s just a state of mind, sitting here hoping for a sign…”
Just What Is expands into a dreamy indie rock meets alternative pop soundscape that has us hypnotized with element of 60s psychedelia, whilst Indigo Out delivers lyricism about “the feeling of relenting to the present moment”. Indigo Out confesses, “As someone with anxiety and feelings of perfectionism, this is something I struggle with daily.”
The rising musician, who is also known as Mark Savidge, is a self-created artist, performing vocals, guitar, bass, drums, keys and also produces his own sound, supported by his partner Jess Fulford who helped create the astounding visual that we experience in the artwork for the single!
Speaking on his history, Indigo Out tells us, “I’ve been playing in various bands and projects with friends over the years (mostly drums and guitar); this is my solo project, more aimed at the psychedelic-pop aspects of my sound.”
Elaborating on his artistry, the artist from Philadelphia says, “I try to blend melancholy themes with bright, poppy aesthetics; although I enjoy optimistic songs, it’s hard for me to write them without feeling cheesy. I usually like to dig into self-reflection and introspection for lyrics, sometimes leaning into/making fun of my own patterns and behaviors.”
Anecdotally, Indigo Out shares, “My computer crashed when recording Just What Is; the song started glitching and I had to let my computer completely run out of battery before it stopped. I recorded that glitch on my iPhone, and the sample makes a brief appearance in the quiet space of the first verse.”
Indigo Out cites Pond, Temples, Boy Pablo, Dayglow, The Lazy Eyes, Tame Impala, Crumb, Washed Out and The Beatles as inspirations, although it is clear that he is creating a universe of his own!
We love the thought provoking hook, “I let the truth sink in, there’s no acceptance, Just What Is…“, and appreciate the authenticity and soundscape that Indigo Out delivers with his work. We have added Just What Is to our New Music Spotlight playlist, whilst we explore his wider discography including Figure It Out and Puddles.
