By now you will have seen that we featured Wotts for their cerebral commentary on self-destruction on Domino, and their atmospheric and optimistic single, LEMONADE, so we were thrilled to hear that the rising Canadian duo had just released the brand new, and provocatively titled, 6 Shooter!
Kicking off with an immersive guitar riff and slide with rolling drums, 6 Shooter opens with atmospheric vocals and a glistening indie-pop rock soundscape.
The track is Wotts’ first collaboration, created with fellow Canadian artist The Desert Island Big Band (DIBB), who challenged the du to use parts from his single, Six Shooter. We love the subtle nuances in the production, like the laser sounds and are always in awe of the value that the duo delivers.
Speaking on the track, Wotts confess, “We’d say it’s less of a remix, and more of a reimagining. What we came up with, was something that has a bit of a smokey/desert vibe, touching a bit on The Killers and The War On Drugs.”
The artwork might be the same, but the soundscape and lyrics are different, with Wotts adding their dimensionality to the original concept. Although inspired by The Killers and The War On Drugs as the duo cited above, it definitely has it’s own unique energy, in cohesive alignment with Wotts‘ sound which we adore.
Speaking on the collaboration, Jayem from Wotts tells us, “We’ve always wanted to team up with someone else on a track, but we knew that it had to make sense. We’re huge fans of The Desert Island Big Band, so when we were approached, it was an easy answer.”
Bassist and guitarist Ricky 100 adds, “We got all the parts, and instead of glueing them together to hear the whole song, we took an element here and there and just started building on the go without any preconceived ideas. We didn’t listen to the full track before we made ours, that way we knew we were making something that reflected our vibe.”
For Wotts, their reimagined version focuses on someone carving their own path using nothing but will and heart. A wholesome message that we appreciate!
Jayem explains, “It’s easy to get disillusioned. Some people are always going to have an idea about how you should live your life, so this is a song for those that follow their gut and take the road less travelled to find happiness.”
According to Ricky 100, “I think we’re having a lot of fun with exploring new sounds and really trying to build an atmosphere with our music.”
Wotts are definitely on the rise and have hit the stages of RBC Bluesfest, Canadian Music Week and Junofest and has received shoutouts for their work from several outlets including CBC Radio (Canada), Metro News (Canada) and PopMatters (U.S.)!
We have added 6 Shooter to our New Music Spotlight playlist, whilst we continue to stream Wotts‘ wider discography including LEMONADE and Domino!
