Establishing the mood with a visceral and cerebral frequency, Slay Positive opens his new single, Mind Control with subversion and intrigue before expanding into an alternative rock meets grunge vibe.
Opening with the thought-provoking lyrics, “Disappear into the void my subconscious has been destroyed, swallow pills to ease my mind, the doctor says I’ll be just fine…”, we are already hypnotized and love Slay Positive‘s flow and nuanced delivery.
Slay Positive is the brainchild of bassist and vocalist Bill Batty. Live, he is “backed by a group of life like androids, indistinguishable from real humans.” We already appreciate his comedic nature in song and presence.
Bill says that he constructed these androids in his secret lair at Mount Rushmore; inside Abe Lincoln’s left nostril. Very Ritchie Rich indeed!
The rising artist from Atlanta cites Nine Inch Nails, Rancid, Rage Against the Machine, Royal Blood, Beastie Boys, Death From Above 1979 and Beck as influences, but it is clear that he is creating an alternate dimension of his own!
The visual for Mind Control is a trippy illuminati-esque journey through the human psyche, in line with the sonic nature of the track, and we are obsessed.
When recounting the process of creating the track, Slay Positive says, “I was playing this old Playstation 2 game called Manhunt 2. In the game you play as a patient who escapes from a mental asylum with his cellmate. Through the course of the game, it’s revealed that the cellmate is actually a second personality, implanted into our hero’s brain by a secret government cabal; in order to create mind controlled assassins. I thought that was dope. When I came up with this bass tone (which I call “evil porno”) the crazy tone reminded me of the crazy game.”
We love the detail and authenticity behind Slay Positive’s creation and have added Mind Control to our New Music Spotlight playlist, whilst we await new music from the rising star!
