Establishing the mood with atmospheric vocals intertwined with intricate electric guitar, Latchy opens his latest single, Girl, with the inquisitive lyrics, “Oh girl, could this maybe happen? Is this just a show? Are you just an actor?”
Girl expands to deliver an immersive and nostalgic alternative pop frequency, celebrating the joy at the start of a new relationship. Latchy paints a charming and relatable picture of “sitting in that moment of tension before you lean in and the relief when your feelings are reciprocated.”
We appreciate the synthetic futurism of the choruses that juxtaposes the nostalgic elements of the verses, and are in awe of Latchy‘s atmospheric vocals and poetic nuance in his brand of storytelling.
The Singapore-based, Australian singer delivers charm and it is no surprise that he has been championed by Triple J, Acid Stag and Happy Mag.
The rising artist self-describes as the Beach Boys meets Kaytranada, and cites influences including Glass Animals, Flight Facilities and The Weeknd, although it is clear that he is creating a universe of his own.
Speaking on his creative process, Latchy confesses, “I went from finding the main riff on guitar sitting on my couch to having a finished song within a couple of hours”. He teamed up with longtime collaborator Jack Arentz at Joyluck Studio to co-create the opus.
We have added Girl to our New Music Spotlight playlist, whilst we explore Latchy‘s wider discography including Foreign Local and Soda Dream.
