Establishing the mood with bold and immersive bass, guitar details and textured drums, Route 500 open their new single, Not Today, with the situational yet optimistic lyrics, “I’ll be warming to the colder afternoons from now, draw a line in the grass, to get me through the next few hours, I’ve got a bad feeling something good is on it’s way, but I can’t tell a change…”
The song expands into an alternative folk meets acoustic rock frequency which feels warm and transcendental touching upon themes of the human condition, solitude and connection.
Elaborating on the release, Route 500 tell us, “Not Today lives in the moments you don’t want to engage with the world, creating any menial distraction to steer clear of your own mind, drifting through numbness, wanting to be left well alone and for time to simply pass.”
Lyrical highlights include the empowering “If I exist at all then I’d rather rely on myself alone…” and the profound “I’d have to be cruel to be some kind of comfort to you…”, and we appreciate how the opus build with drama and emotion.
Route 500 is a new independent project from Brighton, illustrating life observations and dissociative states through their dynamic, lo-fi sound and compelling vocals. Not Today comes as the second single from their upcoming debut album set to land later this year.
The band play London’s prestigious St Pancras Old Church for the first time as a four-piece June 29. Meanwhile, we have added Not Today to our New Music Spotlight playlist, whilst we stream Route 500‘s wider discography include The Slowest Sting.
