Establishing the mood with a bright and rising pulsing melody, fused with synthetic textures and a cerebral pitched sample, Aubrey Hays opens the Boy Sim Remix of I Wanna See This Through with the vulnerable and emotive lyrics, “Time keeps slipping, I’m left gripping my covers at night, feeling childish, in her wildest dreams, she would never imagine this life…”
The song expands with dimensional percussion to deliver a folktronica meets indie-pop hybrid soundscape as Aubrey Hays sings the optimistic hook “I wanna see this through…”
It is no surprise that the versatile Austin artist was recently named a Tiny Desk Top Shelf finalist. With this remix with celebrated hyperpop act Boy Sim (Slayyyter, Ayesha Erotica), they are eager to show off a more futuristic side of their music.
Lyrical highlights include the wise, “When you jump you should expect to fall but it shouldn’t stop you…” and the powerful “Wouldn’t it be nice to believe in yourself?”
Originally written during Hays’s time in Austin Music Foundation’s Artist Development Program, I Wanna See This Through in its original form is dream-pop in the vein of Feist, constructed around twinkling electric and toy pianos and Aubrey Hays’s enchanting vocal.
Speaking on the meaning of the track, Aubrey Hays confesses “I Wanna See This Through is about being an artist, and deciding that sometimes taking that leap of faith into your artistry is the only thing left to do when you’re standing at the edge.”
“It can be the hardest and best thing you ever do with your life, but wouldn’t it be nice to believe in yourself and really go for something that’s entirely your own?”, they continue.
The collaboration with Boy Sim came about after Aubrey Hays heard his remix of Latin pop artist Gina Chavez’s song She Persisted. They tell us, “I loved how She Persisted moved and thought the remix was innovative, fresh, and fun. My brain lives in a very analog place most of the time so I really loved the idea of being able to work with someone who was so involved in the futurism of hyperpop”.
We love the end result and have added I Wanna See This Through to our New Music Spotlight playlist, whilst we continue streaming Aubrey Hays and Boy Sim‘s wider discographies.
