Establishing a mood with immersive hums, reflected by the same melody with a blues guitar riffs, topped off we a luscious harmonica detail, we are already hypnotized by Derek Lee Goodreid‘s Born to Raise Hell & Sing the Blues.
The song expands with drums and a blues-rock hybrid soundscape, as Derek delivers the opening lyric, “When I was born the devil knew that I was born to raise hell and to sing the blues…”
Born to Raise Hell & Sing the Blues blends classic iconography into a crossroad-themed narrative with authentic blues harmonica from Hector Ruano (Venezuela) and the thumping rockabilly upright bass of Stephen K Donnelly (Canada), along with howling vocals (note the artwork!) and gritty blues rock guitar from our protagonist Derek Lee Goodreid.
Speaking on the muse of the track, Derek confesses that Born to Raise Hell & Sing the Blues was “inspired by one of my greatest songwriting influences, legendary blues singer, Howlin’ Wolf.”
Derek elaborates, “This song is the epitomy of gritty blues, with lyrics featuring God, the Devil & Death”, and we are obsessed. The track was mixed and mastered at Howling Light Recordings in Perth, Australia.
