Setting the tone with textured and padded drums with an exquisite, layered, glistening and divergent synthscape, we are already hypnotized by Neon Black Dreams‘ latest ballad and addition to their hyper-reality music universe, Paradise Lost.
Opening with the vulnerable lyrics, “What to do, I’m so alone, never thought we would be apart…”, vocalist Yara Glorien delivers an atmospheric performance, fused cohesively with JJ’s keys, synths and backing vocals. Paradise Lost continues the intricate narrative from the duo, after JJ was taken away at the end of Eternity, Yara is left to contemplate life without him.
The duo tells us that the song deals with “loss, grief and how to move forward in life”, and is designed to provide hope “even in the darkest of times”. They say, “While Paradise may appear to be Lost, it can always be found again.”
Neon Black Dreams cite influences including Madison Beer, Depeche Mode, The Eurythmics and Arianna Grande, but it is clear that they are creating a universe of their own.
The band began during late 2020 as JJ searched for the perfect voice to tell the story. In early 2021, Yara joined the band and the future was set. The pair come from wildly different musical backgrounds. With music that combines Pop, Synthwave, Post-rock with R’n’B infused vocals to create another dimension of sound. The band does not accept musical genre limits but rather allows the power and feeling of the songs to dictate the sound. JJ brings his love of films scores and synth pioneers to try and capture the raw emotion of the characters in the story.
Paradise Lost also comes with a lo-fi performance visual which is captivating, as we cannot get enough of Yara’s emotive delivery, especially with the profound depth of the message of the song.
We have added Paradise Lost to our New Music Spotlight playlist, whilst we stream the duo’s wider discography including Eternity, Reach for the Light and Dreams.
