Setting the tone with immersive and elegant string melodies, David Baron and Fiona Glenn open their new single, Champion with the empowering lyrics, “Eyes strong, look ahead, this is your moment, it’s who you are, never forget it’s what you came here for…”
The composition expands with textured drums and percussive elements from producer David Baron, fused with the atmospheric and emotive vocals from singer, Fiona Glenn. The song was written by Donna Lewis and David Barton.
It is no surprise that Fiona Glenn is already receiving comparisons to Lorde, Lana Del Rey and Norah Jones, which we can echo, but it is clear that the creative team behind Champion are creating a powerful universe of their own.
Champion features the hook, “Mighty fighter, such a sight ya, the champion, cause’ nobody can keep you down…”, along with “uh huh” vocal add libs and echoes not dissimilar to National Anthem by Lana Del Rey. Producer arranger David Baron also works with The Lumineers and Lenny Kravitz.
The canvas of Champion delivers “a high energy anthem for fighting for greatness”. Speaking on the track, David says, “It is a hybrid, that combines real drums, trumpet fanfare, electric guitars and pianos with synthesizers. Fiona’s vocals are layered representative of a squad. The power of the group backing up the singular champion.”
The creative team elaborates, “It was inspired by Simone Biles. She withdrew from competing in an Olympic event and faced a backlash from armchair critics. She was a champion in our eyes twice: first for being so good at what she and second for taking care of her mental and physical health. She’s better than almost anyone will ever be. That’s something that should be celebrated. This song is intended as a celebration.”
We love the meaning and energy of the composition, and have added it to our New Music Spotlight playlist, whilst we stream David Baron and Fiona Glenn‘s wider discographies.
