Setting the tone with enigmatic bass guitar building into drums, cymbal crashes and immersive and intricate electric guitar, we are already hypnotized by Shady Oaks‘ latest single, Numb.
Written by band member, lead guitarist and vocalist Ty Gallaway, Numb is an emotive composition that Ty wrote when he felt as if he was actually numb from emotion. He described that he could not feel anything towards his ex, but would move along with the relationship hoping that one day it would change.
Numb takes us on an introspective journey of the human condition, with atmospheric vocals and a moody blues meets alternative rock frequency. The band confesses awe for their bandmate by saying, “Ty’s life was an absolute dumpster fire but he somehow managed to create this music despite his life falling apart. It was pretty impressive.”
“Most of our music that has been recorded or that is being recorded is a reflection of Ty’s life events leading up to a messy divorce”, says the band.
They add descriptively with reference to the new single, “Numb makes you want to die, have sex, and do a lot of drugs all simultaneously in excess”, when elaborating on the smooth yet profound vibe of the track.
The band from Denver, Colorado are two years into the scene and are having some serious success, whilst drip feeding their album to us! Shady Oaks is made up of Ty Gallaway, Jonah Samp- on drums, Loren Dorland on production and additional vocals, Brendan Lamb on bass and Isaac Vance on guitar and vocals.
They cite influences from heavy blues rock bands such as Jack White, The Dead Weather and The Black Angels, but it is clear that Shady Oaks are creating their own sonic universe.
Numb was recorded, engineered, and produced by Loren Dorland at Mighty Fine Productions. The track was mastered by Jack White’s engineer Bill Skibbe at Third Man Records.
We love Shady Oaks‘ sound and energy, have added Numb to our New Music Spotlight platlist and have been exploring the band’s wider discography including Home and 3AM.
