Setting the tone with luxurious layered vocals, Remi Charles opens his debut single Hush with the comforting lyrics, “Hush little baby, don’t you cry…”
The song expands with minimal percussion, whilst Remi sings poetically and atmospherically, delivering a narrative touching upon love and the human condition.
Hush utilises barebones electronic production and heartbreaking vocals to tell a story of letting go of a bygone love in order to strive for a better tomorrow and a higher plane of existence.
The vocal harmonies are out of this world, reminiscent of icons like Prince and D’Angelo. Remi originally comes from a background of rock and speaking on their inspiration to start releasing says, “over the course of the pandemic I found myself at a crossroads. I was dealing with mental health issues which had to be reckoned with, and I realised I was not happy with the state of my music projects at the time.”
He continues, “This song is my debut release as a solo artist, turning towards more electronic based production and soulful, emotive vocals. It is the first of what I hope will be a series of twelve songs detailing my journey from saying goodbye to a tumultuous and painful time in my life, to discovering a new version of myself, and finding new strength and renewed love for music in different forms.”
Remi Charles is a singer-songwriter and producer who is based in London. Originally, Remi was known by friends for his alt-rock project Heavyman, but he became disillusioned with his musical path when he contracted COVID-19 and has reinvented himself, ditching rock swagger for cross-genre alt-pop, blending electronic production, organic textures, and heartfelt, soulful melody to deliver an emotional punch that is both melancholy and hopeful.
Remi cites Jai Paul, James Blake and Sam Smith as some of his peer artists, but it is clear that Remi Charles is creating a universe of his own.
We have added Hush to our New Music Spotlight playlist and are excited to hear more from the rising star.
