Setting the tone with enigmatic and emotive piano, we are already hypnotized by Olivier Pierre‘s debut opus, PACTUM SERVA.
The composition expands with textured strings that deliver a transcendental listening experience, fused cohesively with the intricate piano performance. The strings build emotionally, before we also experience immersive drums and trumpet.
The opus comes with a cinematic music video that shows the vulnerability of the planet with iconic visuals of destruction, life, time escaping, along with apocalyptic and optimistic moments.
The translation of PACTUM SERVA can be interpreted as “keep the faith”, and the piece offers the first glimpse into Olivier’s sonic imagination as this is his first release.
Speaking on the meaning of the composition, Olivier, who is a rising artist from Luxembourg says, “PACTUM SERVA is written from the perspective of someone who feels despair about the state of our planet and mankind but still hopes for their future. It was composed for all those who believe that beauty, humanity, and intelligence will eventually prevail”.
Elaborating on the emotional detail of the song, Olivier says, “I was reflecting on the reference to time, which is really interesting, since PACTUM SERVA is written in the form of an adagio. An adagio corresponds to a tempo close to that of a clock (60 beats per minute). This slow and majestic beat also corresponds to that of a beating human heart. The correlation between temporal and organic aspects of our life with purely musical elements is an absolutely fascinating subject…”
Olivier Pierre cites Arvo Part, Ennio Morricone and Giya Kancheli as some of his influences, but it is clear that he is creating a universe of his own.
We feel moved and inspired by the debut from Olivier Pierre and have added PACTUM SERVA to our New Music Spotlight playlist, and look forward to further compositions (the next is called Per Lux Solis), and visuals from the artist.
