We recently featured MonkeyRat for their emotive journey with vocalist Anna Sofía Skoradal on their single, The Child, so we were thrilled to hear their latest song, Isolation!
Isolation is a 10-minute opus which sets the tone with cosmic frequencies and a glistening detail that opens with spoken word about the themes of Isolation, self-understanding and self-realization. The atmospheric monologue, delivered by artist Anna Iachino is emotive and transcendental as she shares her wisdom with passion and vigour.
“The knowledge of self was the gift and opportunity, Isolation, time to live as one, as one nation, Isolation…”, recites Anna as the composition expands with intriguing guitar, we feel immersed and electrified by the prose fused cohesively with the depth of the soundscape.
MonkeyRat are based in the Faroe Islands, and Anna expands on her artistry by saying, “Isolation is no stranger to the Faroese people living 62 degrees north of nowhere, isolated from the rest of the world. However, during the height of the global pandemic, the entire world experienced social isolation on a grand scale; cut off from family and friends. We all hunkered down, kept our distance from everyone protecting ourselves from infection. The lack of affection took a toll on everyone’s mental health and well being.”
The song expands mid-way through with a bold guitar chord and drums as Anna delivers further passion with her poetry, and we are met with a subversive art rock soundscape as Anna sings about man-made destruction and “what a crazy world” we live in.
Isolation started as a poem one night in 2020 when Anna was alone in Iceland. One night, out of unbearable loneliness, she tried to contact her husband and musical partner, Arnold Ludvig, composer and bassist of MonkeyRat in the Faroe Islands. Saddened by her inability to reach him, upon her return home from a park, words started overflowing her mind. To this day, she is grateful and thanks her husband for being unreachable.
We are obsessed with Isolation and the depth of Anna’s mind, and have added Isolation to our New Music Spotlight playlist, whilst we continue streaming the wider discography of MonkeyRat including Sex in Wonderful Copenhagen and Good Morning Reykjavik.
