We recently featured 9 o’clock Nasty for their cerebral and psychedelic single, Playboy Driver, so we were thrilled to experience the British band’s latest offering, Darker Star.
Setting the tone with the sounds of crickets on an open road, evolving into a guitar riff with sirens, we are already mesmerized by the soundscape of Darker Star.
The band sings the introspective hook, “I was born under a Darker Star than you…”, whilst the song expands to go through the darker traits of each star sign delivering a message of being at peace with how each of us came to be.
The band describes the song as a “deliciously analogue power ballad that was foretold years ago”. Adding, with wisdom, “Some people just have their life sorted before sperm meets egg. Others just cannot get a break. Yes, it’s written in the stars. I cannot have the same cool car as you because I was born under a Darker Star.”
This is a really intelligent commentary on the astral situation of each living being, and we love the emotive delivery which is fused with a sense of self acceptance in the message of the track.
The song comes with a video which sees our protagonists performing whilst pulling tarot cards, making a commentary on the deterministic nature of our shared reality.
Elaborating on the creative process of the track, 9 o’clock Nasty say, “We made the first demo version with a cardboard box and an acoustic guitar with five strings. That spirit lives on in the final product. We feel it is a standout and marks a new level for us.”
We are obsessed with Darker Star and have added it to our New Music Spotlight playlist, whilst we continue to stream the wider discography from 9 o’clock Nasty!
