Setting the tone with an immersive alternative rock frequency, we are already hypnotized by the enigmatic chords from The Kid and I‘s latest single, Fade Away as they open with their refined sound and existential lyrics, “this faded room that I find myself in today…”
As the song expands, we experience an emotive and immersive sonic vibe as The Kid and I deliver cerebral lyricism referencing the human condition, unknown sentiments and the hook where they plead “Don’t fade away…”
Fade Away has epic and exquisite instrumental segments that embolden the urgency of the message. We are obsessed with the subversive dark pop melody that is on loop in our minds.
Speaking on the meaning of Fade Away, the band says, “[The song] delves into the psyche of someone imbedded in self destructive isolation. Touching on the topic of isolation, anxiety and self loathing whilst being delivered at break neck speed.”
The bands main influences draw from 90’s to contemporary rock – Foo Fighters, Queens of The Stone Age, IDLES to name a few, whilst also incorporating production influences from acts such as Tyler The Creator, Placebo and Mac Demarco, but it is clear that The Kid and I are creating a dimension of their own.
Expanding on the depth of the lyricism, vocalist and guitarist Jacob Powell, who founded the band says, “Fade Away is about being in a state of mind where you are completely trying to isolate yourself from everyone around you, so much so that even looking at yourself in the mirror is too much to handle.”
“Having struggled with mental health issues for most part of my life I just wanted to explore these topics through my music a bit more – and then try leave it on a positive note. With the chorus I am basically talking to myself saying ‘don’t do this to yourself, you can get through this’ something that 10 years ago I wasn’t able to do myself but through support and being lucky enough to get some therapy I’m now able to do, and I wanted to try and reflect that kind of progress through my music”, continues Jacob, as he shares his wisdom.
In addition to Jacob Powell on guitar and vocals, the band consists of Henry Avedian on drums, David Whitmore on bass and Roddy Lynch as lead guitarist whilst performing backing vocals
We love the high octane yet cathartic experience that Fade Away lends itself to, and how openly Jacob and the band touch upon existential themes. We have added the song to our New Music Spotlight playlist, and have been streaming The Kid and I‘s wider discography including White Feather.
