We recently featured Aza Brown for his wise and polished single, For Real?, so we were thrilled to hear the rising artist’s latest release, Afterthought.
Immersing us with enigmatic guitar and a cinematic, psychedelic, alternative rock soundscape fit for a Tarantino movie, Aza sings introspectively, “Afterthought, was I only just an afterthought?”
Afterthought marks the artist’s second single of 2022 delivering a luscious Latin soundscape, “evoking images of James Bond taking on the drug cartels of South America!”
It is no surprise that Aza Brown has amassed over fifty thousand streams on Spotify and has performed live on Liverpool Live Radio and Talk Radio with Bob Mills, before featuring on BBC Introducing East Midlands with presenter Dean Jackson describing Aza as “a fascinating guy…multi-faceted”.
The video for Afterthought sees Aza performing in Mexico, with epic scenery and Mayan ruins! It really added dimensionality to the song and has us transported.
Speaking on the creation of the track, Aza Brown says, “The lyrics just came to me straight away with the music, but I wasn’t actually in that morose place of dejection any more, so I needed a way to turn the song on its head – I integrated my dark side!”
Aza cites influences including The Divine Comedy, The Stone Roses, The Beatles, The Doors, Jellyfish, The Verve, Frank Zappa, Talk Talk and David Bowie, which we can feel come though in his sound, but it is clear that he is carving his own path.
We love Afterthought because although Aza reminisces on the situation that hasn’t been as aligned as he wanted, he does it with intellectual prowess and charm. The Spanish guitar solo is out of this world and hypnotizing, cohesively fusing the message of the song with a vivid soundscape that lends itself to self-realization and eventual healing for the artist.
Aza expands on the meaning of the track, “At first I visualised a fragile Thom Yorke-esque vocal – exposed yet confident in it’s loneliness – dejected, bathing in a sea of self-pity. The energy came later by eliciting vivid pictures of revenge after being kicked when I was down. It’s not about anyone in particular – it’s about everyone who ever fucked me over”.
We have added Afterthought to our New Music Spotlight playlist and continue streaming Aza Brown‘s wider discography including Pure Water and The Way That I Roll. The artist is offering a free download of the song via this link.
