Setting the tone with cerebral frequencies, a rising synth and textured detailing, we are already hypnotized by Viscula‘s single, Seagulls. The track expands into a dark wave meets art rock vibe, with enigmatic guitar, syncopated and transformative drums and percussion that gives the track a more multi-dimensional energy.
Flowing between two sonic universes, one with a synth as the protagonist and one with a psychedelic guitar leading the way, we are obsessed with the composition.
Seagulls is the first single from Viscula‘s instrumental album, IV, which was released on December 17 (2021), and created collaboratively with four musicians who played organic parts without any overlays. It features only drums, bass, guitar and keyboards.
The song is accompanied by a conceptual blue toned visual directed by Alex White from The Electric Soft Parade, that lends itself to a creative and subversive vision. The video was shot last November in London and took place in the atmospheric antique shop ‘LOT ONE TEN’ located in Walthamstow.
The incredible artwork for Seagulls was created by the well-known British collage artist Tom Hodgkinson who also worked on artworks for bands such as Keane and Archive.
We are intrigued by Viscula‘s intricate soundscape and fusion of post-rock and psychedelia, with cohesive elements of trip-hop and dark wave, so we have added Seagulls to our New Music Spotlight playlist, and continue to explore the band’s wider discography including Just Go and Alien Milk.
