Toothbrush release enigmatic and conceptual debut, Kaleidoscope

Setting the tone with electric guitar details and sporadic percussion as the song expands to reveal immersive drums, Toothbrush deliver spoken word on their debut single, Kaleidoscope, with the opener “Has anyone got a lighter? You can smell the cheap perfume for fucking miles…”

We are already intrigued by the subversive debut from the UK band, the introduction and artwork alone lend themselves to thought provoking concepts.

The track is alternative in nature, conversational, with moments of angst, bitterness, rage, kind of like The Streets, but for juxtaposition, it flows into a more luxurious alternative Britpop, Arctic Monkeys-esque sound for the hook.

This adds dimensionality and relatability to the the track whilst we are faced with the protagonist who is highly disillusioned in his current reality.

Kaleidoscope was recorded at Catherine Songs Studios in 2020 and was mixed by Tony Burrata, with mastering by Cicely Balston.

The band say this is their “first and our last single”, but we can only hope that Toothbrush release more, as we love the journey they are taking us on, and we hope that the main character finds solace as they “venture out into the depths of the grimiest smoking area you ever did hear”. In the meantime, we have added Kaleidoscope to our New Music Spotlight playlist!
