Setting the tone with glistening and celestial bell details with panning frequencies, we are already hypnotized by Rain Bice‘s debut single, Paper Cuts. As the song evolves, Rain sings, “My skin is paper thin, it breaks every times you speak, you say they’re just words, but not to me…”
Paper Cuts goes on to expand into a dark pop soundscape where Rain addresses the struggles of internalized negative thoughts and self harm in a metaphorical way.
“Your paper cuts are in my mind, I think about them all the time…” sings Rain with passion as they process the trauma that they have experience.
Speaking on their artistry, Rain says, “I take my experiences and turn them into music hoping to help other people going through the same stuff, it’s like my therapy.”
We really appreciate this intention and the message of the song is really relatable. Rain cites Billie Eilish and Melanie Martinez as influences, but is clear that they are creating a path of their own.
Lyrical highlights include the assertive “You’ve disguised your despise, but I can see through your spell…” and the self-realized “Maybe it was me the whole time, my brain’s a different person, it likes to lie, I’m the one that cut with paper, I’m such a traitor…”
Paper Cuts was produced in collaboration with Anthony Anderson who mixed the vocals and music, and the song is written by Rain from their perspective and experience with self harm, negative thoughts and mental illness.
We are obsessed with Paper Cuts and love the direction that Rain is taking with their artistry. We have added the song to our New Music Spotlight playlist and are excited to hear more from Rain Bice!
