We first experienced Alli Bean‘s creative prowess on The Grinning Barretts’ dynamic and cerebral EP, Hope Like Hell, so we were thrilled to have the chance to experience more depth from the artist on her solo project.
Setting the tone with enigmatic bass with jazz detailing, Alli Bean opens Two Birds with the vulnerable and assertive lyrics, “No, I don’t wanna be without you, but I gotta find my way alone…”
We are already hypnotized by the frequency of the song, which is the second single off of Alli Bean‘s first album, Outside Voice. Two Birds has a groovy energy whilst Alli serves luxurious and self-aware lyricism.
A lyrical highlight is the poetic hook, “I see the horizon, Two Birds flying, the sun is rising…”
Speaking on the meaning of the song, Alli Bean says that Two Birds “illustrates the choices of love”, she continues sagely, “Don’t lose yourself in another; fly closely to them.”
Alli cites Wynton Kelly, Horace Silver, Fiona Apple and Amy Winehouse, but it is clear that she is creating a universe of her own!
We have added Two Birds to our New Music Spotlight playlist and are eagerly anticipating Alli’s debut album, Outside Voice: a culmination of seven of her favourite original works dating back to 2017, which is set for release on June 1, 2022!
