Setting the tone with luxurious strummed acoustic guitar and light percussion detail, Martin Reynolds opens his latest release, I’ll Crawl with the introspective lyrics, “Do you believe in justice, do you believe in equality?
As the song expands, Martin takes us on a journey touching upon the themes of freedom of speech, love energy, consciousness and choosing the right side of history.
We love the enigmatic textured hummed harmonies and the variation of Martin’s delivery as he sings about progression.
Martin Reynolds is the former drummer for Tamworth-based duo You Dirty Blue, who performed at the iconic Glastonbury, as well as supporting big artists such as: Wolf Alice, Starcrawler, The Groundhogs, Radio Moscow and the up and coming two piece, John.
The multi-instrumentalist cites The Beatles, Bob Dylan, Neil Young, Jackson Browne, Emitt Rhodes, Laura Marling, The Beach Boys, Elvis Presley and Johnny Cash as some of his influences, but it is clear from I’ll Crawl that he is creating a universe of his own.
Speaking on the inspiration behind the song, the rising artist says, “The song was inspired by Martin Luther King Jr, and what was going on in the world during the lockdown period, mainly the protests that were taking place and peoples attitudes towards current events. I was listening to a lot of Dylan at the time. It’s a song about moving forward, it’s about being part of the solution, rather than being part of the problem and asks a lot questions of society.”
We love the conscious journey that Martin is taking us on and have added I’ll Crawl to our New Music Spotlight playlist, and have been immersing ourselves in Martin Reynolds‘ wider discography including his 2021 album, Where There’s Hope.
