Setting the vibe with an immersed cyber guitar that begins to expand in clarity and dimensionality fused with a pulsing bass, we are already hypnotized by ¡BAS!‘s album, Layers of ¡BAS!.
The rising artist begins to sing experimentally on the first track Own Time, with breathy details, delivering a soul, funk, jazz vibe as the bass and guitars take on protagonist roles of their own.
¡BAS! delivers cerebral lyricism where he sings introspectively about the human condition and his emotions.
The second track, My House takes on a more house music energy with synthetic risers and percussive details, giving us a futuristic yet nostalgic club energy.
Speaking on the record, ¡BAS!, aka Basilio Garcia, says, “This album is a meeting point of myriad musical influences that come together to create something not heard before. It is unique in style and delivery by including both electronic and acoustic elements.”
He continues, “This project strives to tell a story through authentic sound, to reach others, and to unearth a new genre stemming from unbarred creativity.”
Right Reasons takes on an atmospheric club vibe, whilst ¡BAS! delivers some great rapping. Soul is exactly what you would imagine – a futuristic soul vibe with iconic soul vocals. In that sense, a lot of the song names are literal representations. Next up is Space, which is more minimalist and also features a guitar that sounds like a sitar.
Zone is track seven which sees the warped electric guitar as the main protagonist of the piece. Bring the Funk which gives us Ibiza vibes, whilst Roll On takes us on a drive through Beverly Hills.
Navigate features jonny sé on vocals which adds further dimensionality to the record. Speaking on his influences, the rising artist cites Jimi Hendrix, James Brown, Ternion sound, Disclosure, The Beatles, Vulfpeck, FKJ and Mac Miller, which we can feel coming through although it is clear that the artist is creating his own universe.
He expands, “The album was inspired by the music that you end up making when you do not put restrictions on your imagination while creating. The album is intended to be genuine, without concerning itself with the need to fit into a box of genre.”
For You is more intimate, and Nightride DUB is a moody and immersive sensual soundscape. Speaking on the final track, ¡BAS! says “Funk-U-Later is one of the more unique songs on the album, as it brings together a combination of new sounds heard throughout the entirety of the album.”
We love the emotion conveyed on the record, as the artist says himself, a journey through “inspired, annoyed, nostalgic, happy, focused or introspective” moments with each track having their own dimension. We have added My House to our New Music Spotlight playlist!
