Setting the frequency with layered guitars and textured drums with an emerging trumpet, we are already hypnotized by Hold On, I’m Comin’, latest release from Paul Loren.
The already established artist from Brooklyn opens the song, once sung by Sam & Dave with the optimistic and reassuring lyrics, “Now don’t you ever be sad, lean on me, when times are bad, when the day comes and you’re down, in real trouble about to drown, just hold on, cos I’m comin’, hold on…”
We feel a warm sense of comfort from Paul’s tone, in a world where we can sometimes lean into the sadness, Hold On, I’m Comin’ offers a glimmer of hope and we are grateful that he decided breathe fresh life into this piece of historic artistry.
The original song has a slower tempo and is more soul inspired, whereas Paul’s cover has a 60’s Nashville inspired vibe.
Paul Loren has appeared on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, opened for The Temptations and been hired to play the birthday party of Jennifer Lopez. He is inspired by Roy Orbison, Randy Newman, Harry Nilsson, The Beatles, The Beach Boys and The Band.
The cover itself features Paul on acoustic guitar, Zach Jones on drums, and percussion, Oscar Albis Rodriguez on guitar and bass, Steven Salcedo on saxophone and Matt Owens playing the trumpet.
This collection of players met at Rockwood Music Hall in NYC and evolved into the house band at Five & Dime Records. We have added Paul’s cover of Hold On, I’m Comin’ to our New Music Spotlight playlist and have also been exploring his album Betwixt.
