Setting the frequency with an enigmatic and cerebral sound, which is a reversed piano, fused with grand strings and and immersive layered textures, we are immediately hypnotized by Lullaby, the first release from Pena Hughes-John‘s Lethia’s Natorium.
Lullaby is the album opener and feels exactly as it should, cinematic, grand, iconic, moving and unforgettable. In a bold move, the music for Lullaby was taken from Pena Hughes-John’s song Fade Away and played backwards. We love an artist who references themselves, and feel it is very symbolic and iconic.
The song also features details of Pena’s Ghosts of my Past poem, however the rising artist describes her sophomore album, Lethia’s Natorium, as the inner pages of a book with Lullaby being “the gel that links the two records” together.
Speaking on the design of the record, Pena says, “The title came about whilst listening to the track and adding a music box sound harmony to the music, it sounded like a bedtime lullaby.”
She sings the words, “Come with us, sing the Lullaby, it’s all you have on this, long, dark night…” which fuse cohesively with the intention of the song.
At the time when the song was written, Pena had been suffering from bad bouts of insomnia and after a few sleepless nights, the words flowed well with the music.
The emotional-sounding strings are played by Peter Voronov which wraps around the moody and subversive backwards piano.
We are in awe of the creation and have hit the repeat button a number of times to truly understand this dimensional masterpiece. We are excited to hear the rest of Pena Hughes-John‘s Lethia’s Natorium and have added Lullaby to our New Music Spotlight playlist.
