Enticing us with a rising cerebral frequency, SVBERTOOTH open their latest release, she never loved me, with the vulnerable “she calls me when it’s half past five…cos she only likes me when I’m high.”
The duo from Ontario, Canada takes us on an emotive journey on their second single, which acts as a metaphor for for the toxic relationships that one can have with a person, habit or substance.
Themes of she never loved me include drug and alcohol abuse, and how that can infiltrate into personal connections in a detrimental way. SVBERTOOTH deliver great metaphorical lyricism, with intricate and detailed flow. We love the drill drops and the Kanye West influence on the vocal production and nuanced details of the track.
Continuing on the themes of the song, the duo adds, “For us it was about to the toxic relationship that we have had with drugs and people we care for. It deals mostly with the delusional mind state that ones in when suffering with addiction. Instead of expressing these thoughts and feelings with gloomy and sad emotions we chose to express with anger and energy, relating to the other overwhelming emotions one can experience. That is why the beat is more drill/trap style.”
We are grateful for the wisdom and learned experiences that SVBERTOOTH are sharing with us through this composition. They cite Alice In Chains, Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Yung Lean, Aphex Twin, The Neptunes, Kanye West, Ozzy Osbourne, Frank Ocean, Deftones, Soundgarden, Juice Wrld, XXXTENTACION, Travis Scott, Kid Cudi, Lil Peep and Lil Tracy as some of their influences which we can feel come to life in she never loved me.
They continue, “In the peak of our opioid addiction, we were fully delusional of the consequences of our actions and how it was affecting the people around us and our mental health. We used this song as a form of self reflection without being fully aware of it at the time.”
“We didn’t even fully process what this song was about until sobriety.”
she never loved me is featured on our New Music Spotlight playlist and we have also been listening to SVBERTOOTH‘s debut single, COMEDOWN.
