Setting the frequency with an acoustic guitar strum, fused into enigmatic electric guitar that expand with a pulsing bass, Kaiyah Mercedes opens her debut release After Summer Ends with the lyrics, “Kicking stones across the empty road, my sneaker soles, scuffing as we go, neither one of us want this summer to end…”
Painting a picture of the end of an era, the introspective emerging artist continues,“When I see you go, I know I’ll waste away, waiting for you to call, I know things will change, after summer ends…”
After Summer Ends is the debut single for 15-year-old singer/songwriter Kaiyah Mercedes. She has a down to earth folk style, a taste of rock influence, and delivers unique harmonies in her artistry, whilst this catchy heartbreak song captures the feeling before the goodbyes after falling in love.
“I have written lyrics for years, and I can say that I almost always write from real experience and emotion. This song is no different, even though it is a fictional story, because I am writing from real feelings I have experienced. One of my favourite ways to experiment in song writing is using my feelings to write about characters I create in my head”, Kaiyah Mercedes elaborated on the creation of the song.
Speaking wisely on her genre bending ambitions, Kaiyah says “I take influence from so many different musicians in a variety of genres, and I really want to use that variation in my own music. My music is a sort of fusion of different genres, with subtle hints from some of my favourite artists, and samples and sounds that I pick up in my everyday life. I don’t want to fit into a box and be defined by one genre, I want to be my own genre.”
We are really excited by the emergence of Kaiyah as a rising artist, will definitely be staying tuned for more, and have added After Summer Ends to our New Music Spotlight playlist!
