Setting the tone with textured and immersive rising and panning synths with intricate melodic details and cosmic frequencies, Trevour Amunga opens his second EP, Vespa, with the lyrics, “I gotta find a piece of mind, will I find it before it’s gone?“
The opening track of the EP is called Piece of Mind and is an existential track referencing our protagonist’s pure desire as he invites us into his reality and the depth of his mind. The song features a stunning verse from Josh Berkley delivering an R&B vocal which is juxtaposed to the more cerebral and experimental nature of Trevour Amunga‘s delivery.
Trevour‘s themes are profound and introspective with intelligent commentary on our shared reality, which is is further exhibited in the second track of the EP, Body Memory where the rising artist sings “take me to the place where the ceiling ain’t there…”
Body Memory features glistening bells and a pulsing production, and also features additional vocals from Luna Bands. The lyrical themes of the song are equally introspective and we love the immersive nature of the vibe that the rising artist has created.
The third track from the EP is called Glo and opens with vocal textures and a synth that immediately send us astral. The song also features additional vocals from Luna Bands and lends itself to a more experimental nature.
Speaking on his influences, Trevour Amunga cites Kendrick, Outkast, Sly and Blu and says, “Those artists have always had a certain way in which they make their music thats really poetical to me.”
We can feel that energy come through in Glo as he takes us through specific dates that have influenced his journey and artistry, along with cohesive themes of breaking the glass ceiling which are prevalent throughout the record.
Bleached is the fourth track from Vespa and has a more lo-fi vibe as our protagonist sings, “I’m beside myself…”, production and textures are definitely more experimental here and it makes more sense that the LA-based artist also included Bjork as one of his influences.
We are then met with a short musical interlude Side by Side which featured some mesmerizing vocal textures before we enter Vertigo, where Trevour gives us glitched vocals as he sings, “I’ve been humbled by grief”, as the track transforms into a more subversive experience whilst the artist tries to find himself.
The closing track of the EP is Dec 28th, which opens with a record player and epic and astral rising synth with emotive and choral vocals as Trevour delivers the lyrics, “I wish I could flee, but these tears are so free…”
Speaking on the body of work as a whole, Trevour Amunga says, “This is my 2nd EP Vespa, which means evening prayer. I made the project around the time I lost my dad to cancer, in 2020, and so the songs are about me battling with my faith in God, grief, a fear that I’ll never find a peace of mind.”
We love Vespa and have added Piece of Mind to our New Music Spotlight playlist, and have been streaming Trevour Amunga existing discography including his album For Akira.
