Immersing us with luscious acoustic guitar fused with frequencies and a bright bell, Joe Kann sets the tone for his new release, Old Town Square with an enigmatic vocal delivery.
The rising artist, who has been releasing consistently since 2020, says that Old Town Square is “a song about the decay of small town values and life in the United States”.
Through the artist’s medium of singer-songwriter meets folk, Joe Kann vulnerably sings “the only things left made by fists, dreams long gone, only my sadness still exists.” We love Joe’s expression and the narrative arc that he can create with his poetic lyricism.
As time changes, we experience the evolution of the physical world around us and what Joe is bringing to life with his message is nostalgic, harmonious and laced with reminiscence for a time passed.
When discussing his influences, Joe cites Leonard Cohen, Jackson Browne, James Taylor, Townes Van Zandt, The Lumineers, Frank Turner, Nick Drake, Mary Gauthier and Leo Kottke, which we can understand and really feel coming through in Old Town Square.
“My songs are sometimes a reflection of my life, and other times they are inspired by stories that resonate with me. Travel has given me a wider perspective on the human condition, and so has getting older – the more you see in life the more you can feel,” Joe says profoundly.
“For me, music is different now,” he admits. “I can express things I never thought I could express when I was younger. Back in my 20s, I never worried about time, it felt like I had my whole life to do whatever I wanted. It doesn’t feel that way now.”
Joe continues, “These songs will be around longer than me , and I want to leave a legacy for my kids that shows you can do things with your life beyond whatever makes you money. You’re not defined by what you do for work.”
Since 2020, Joe Kann has been steadily releasing music, and we have been immersing ourselves in his wider discography including Something Beautiful, Something Good and Through His Eyes. We have also added Old Town Square to our New Music Spotlight playlist!
