Setting the tone with celestial frequencies, plucked guitar and a synth, Juliander opens his double release with the introspective lyrics, “I’m afraid it won’t be us forever, lucid dreams of not being together, who am I without you, do I wanna know…“
The narrative of the first song Who Am I Without You takes us on a journey of self realization fused with enigmatic production and through provoking and visual lyricism including the cosmic “blame the moon and rotation, going fast like I’m stuck in a spaceship”, the intimate and open “maybe we should try kissing other people” and the wondering “maybe we should try something different, maybe we should keep our distance”.
The story continues with the second track from the EP which is called If I Can’t Have You. This is a story of a protagonist who only wants to be with their muse, as he sings “if I can’t have you, just, say you want me, cause I don’t need nobody else”.
The production of If I Can’t Have You holds a sense of excitement and optimism, in juxtaposition to it’s moodier and astral counterpart. with a pulsing beat that energises us lending itself to hope for the protagonist’s will to manifest a connection with his muse.
Juliander is a Swedish artist, songwriter and producer uses a mix of analog synthesizers, organic instruments and power beats.
In 2017 he released his debut single “Same Moon” and opened for Zara Larsson on her European tour. In the same period the DJ and producer Alan Walker released “All Falls Down” featuring Juliander and Noah Cyrus.
Juliander got recognition for his songs and musicality and he was invited to perform at some of the world’s top music festivals like Coachella, Summerburst and SunBurn.
When discussing Who Am I Without You, Juliander says, “Who Am I Without You came from two ideas in the same project and that’s why there is a significant key change in the song. I couldn’t let go of either idea so I chose to merge them into one. I think that the production reflects the lyrics and really works to bring the story to life.”
Speaking on the creative process of If I Can’t Have You, a song he almost gave away, Juliander says, “I felt that it had something special so I was a bit hesitant to give it away, so I must admit I decided to keep it for myself. I more or less completed it in 30 minutes that same day. I’d never been that excited over a song before and it felt huge.”
We are super excited for Juliander‘s upcoming debut album, set for release this Autumn and have been immersing ourselves in his wider discography including Afterglow and Nervous. Who Am I Without You and If I Can’t Have You have been added to our New Music Spotlight playlist!
