Ethereal keys and a frequency set the tone for Shadow, the latest release from rising artist, Seaker.
Born to an Indian father and English mother in the north east of England, life began for Seaker, also known as Kiran Hungin as “a mixed bag of influences and sounds”.
We can feel this magnetic and universal energy come to life on Shadow as the artist delivers an emotive and surreal performance on the record, fused with the enigmatic production and introspective lyricism.
Speaking on her artistry, Seaker says “Most of my memories are tied up in music. If I close my eyes I can be in the back of our VW estate driving to France in our listening to Kate Bush or Van Morrison and watching fields roll past the window. It’s that magical feeling isn’t it. That thing music does to you that you don’t really understand but it stirs something within you. I felt that very young.”
Vocal harmonies, glitchy soundscapes and moody piano make up the rising artist’s frequency, with moments moving from an intimate whisper in the ear to a heartfelt swell of emotion.
Seaker continues, “I try to make music that somehow feels empowering and fragile at the same time. The contrasts in life really interest me – the delicate balance of light and dark, fast and slow, loud and quiet.”
“I find myself caught up in these thoughts a lot and I find elements of it leak in to my songs. A really sad lyric over a soothing instrumental, or mixing marching drums with floaty guitars. I find beauty in the messy space, the ‘in between-ness’. The words are a huge part of it.”
“I grew up listening to storytellers like Leonard Cohen and Joni Mitchell and I really seek that shared connectivity in music. I try to embody that sonically. I hope people feel things when they hear my music.”
Shadow is the first of multiple releases that Seaker has planned for this year, and she says, “I wrote this song as a direct address to my overactive mind. Sometimes even when alone our own head can seem so loud and I was driving myself a bit mad and had to channel it somewhere. I hope people can relate.”
We love the intimacy and depth produced by the artist and can definitely relate to the self-realized and introspective nature of her lyricism.
Shadow has been added to our New Music Spotlight playlist and we have also been immersing ourselves in the wider discography of Seaker, including Ashes, Dreaming and Words.
