Setting the frequency with textures synths, bright bell details and glitched details before rippling drums immerse us, Oneo Fakind open their latest EP with the title track, Life in the Background.
We are immediately hypnotized by the high end production and panning details that transport us to another dimension.
The opening track of the EP builds in excitement and percussive elements expand whilst more industrial bass sounds and textures that come through to dimensionalize the song. Exquisite synths add further elements to the EP’s title track.
Next, we experience the song Crazed Philosophers (The Limits of Reason Mix) which has a darker and more industrial frequency, and includes textured vocal samples. We are moved by the bass synth which adds a futuristic and cerebral element to the soundscape, and the synth-strings at the end of the song which add an emotional element to the composition.
The creative duo behind Oneo Fakind is comprised of Matt Legge (electronics, synths, drums) and Brett Cairns (electronics, synths, drums), from Toronto, Canada.
The duo conclude their EP with the song The Residue of Your Voice is Like a Rotten Tooth Full of Moths, which is a multi-dimensional track opening with a philosophical conversation, as synths send us astral simultaneously. The finale is quite a cinematic experience.
When describing their art, Oneo Fakind mention lo-fi sensibilities and an eclectic electronic experiment, although for us, the final product is pretty refined and polished, although pushing the boundaries of modern soundscaping.
The duo formed in 2017 and released their debut album Your Secrets are Safe With Us fusing elements of ambient and psychedelic electronica with hip hop and trap. This was followed by their 2018 album Friendly Reality Ambush Squad, with more complex and layered work but the same signature blend of beautifully disparate elements meshing in surprising and often uplifting ways. Their third full length album, 2020’s The Death of Us was also released in the height of the pandemic.
Speaking on their latest album, The Start of Something, the duo says it “bursts with new sounds and ideas as it attempts to shine a light on the cosmic beauty of the world after a dark and turbulent year.”
We have been exploring Oneo Fakind’s wider discography and have added Life in the Background to our New Music Spotlight playlist.
