Every week, we feature some fresh new releases from emerging talent around the world, these are highlighted on our New Music Spotlight playlist on Spotify, but we also share a handful of artists in our round-up who are making waves and deserve a platform.
You can read more features in our Music + Culture section.
Maryze – Experiments
Montreal’s bilingual alt-pop icon Maryze released their single and video, Experiments – and we are obsessed. They serve iconic choreography in the refined visual, and the song is magnetic and hypnotizing, just like the aura of the artist.
Inspired by 2000’s pop and revealed on TikTok that Justin Timberlake’s Señorita was a sonic influence, Experiments takes us on a sonic trip with rhythmic melodies and sultry vocals. We’re in love.
Maryze said in their interview with Wonderland Magazine, “In my experience, society often pushes shame onto sexuality. Women especially are expected to be sexualised by everyone but ourselves. I tried to let go of my own internalised shame when writing ‘Experiments’, and explore what makes me feel most powerful in my body: abandoning control to truly feel in control. As a gender-fluid person, I appreciated working with a non-binary cast, and how director Ariana Molly blurred our bodies into one amorphous being. She embraced and amplified my high femme androgyny.”
Angèle, Damso – Démons – live orchestral
We are equally in love with Angèle‘s Démons – live orchestral version, as we are with the original featuring Damso. The strings are exquisite and we love how it fuses with the pair’s enigmatic vocal delivery.
Charli XCX – Every Rule
Charli XCX‘s album Crash is finally here, and we have the pleasure of experiencing her A.G. Cook collaboration Every Rule. We love the energy that Charli XCX is exuding in this era, truly her main pop girl era. Other stand out songs from the records include Good Ones, Baby and Yuck.
ELIZZA x Lucian – Catch Me If U Can
Rising pop star from London, ELIZZA has just released a super polished bop called Catch Me If U Can, in collaboration with Lucian.
Catch Me If U Can has a disco-pop frequency and is lyrically a commentary on love in a post pandemic world, featuring a great performance from ELIZZA in the music video. The soundscape of the track is exquisite and high end pop, and it is filled with ethereal textures and bright synths.
The visual is directed by Elliot Simpson, and filmed all over London. We stan.
Tally Koren – The Garden of Love
We previously featured Tally Koren for her immaculate single If I Could Write A Love Song, and today we wanted to share her new release, The Garden of Love.
With enigmatic production and textured vocals, we are hypnotized by Tally’s ethereal and emotive energy where she sings of how she chooses love, nature and expansion.
The Israeli born, internationally acclaimed, award-winning singer-songwriter has based the song on the notable William Blake poem, and The Garden of Love is taken from Tally’s forthcoming album based on poems.
Saturn Through My Telescope – If I Told You I Missed You Every Time I Did, You’d Never Hear The End Of It
In advance of their upcoming EP, ambient, post-rock, shoegaze band Saturn Through My Telescope has released their immersive and textured debut song, titled If I Told You I Missed You Every Time I Did, You’d Never Hear The End Of It.
The song is an exquisite and emotive soundscape reflecting on the human condition. We love the long and intricate song name and, the upcoming EP is called Every Time I Talk to You, It’s Like I Open Up a Part of My Heart and Let You Look Inside.
Speaking on their artistry, the band says that the project is “a reflection of the relationship between two friends devoted to each other’s happiness, from the intense attachment that comes with the early stages of such a friendship”. Fans of Deafheaven, This Will Destroy You, Mogwai, We Lost The Sea and Indian Summer will definitely be able to connect!
Dave Mohan – Time and Tides (Re-Vox Version)
A vocal duet reworking of Dave Mohan‘s Time and Tides original. Speaking on the release, Dave says, “I felt the spirit of the song is perhaps even more apt for the present than when first conceived. If you’ve learned to value those close to you a bit more in these troubled times; or known something of the enduring loss of so many – this one’s for you! Of love and loss.”
We love the emotive journey that the re-worked version takes us on!
Freddie Sunshine – It’s ok, I’m Okay
Chicago’s Freddie Sunshine has just released their EP, It’s ok, I’m okay, which has been taking us on a transcendental genre fusing adventure.
It’s ok, I’m okay highlights Freddie Sunshine’s effortless ability to blur genres inviting us into a multi-dimensional world, giving us a snapshot experiences through the artist’s “eccentric lens”.
Lyrical highlights include the introspective, “been living in my thoughts, that shit is dangerous”, the profound “took many souls, seen many go, never gave them one” and the sassy “it’s a bitchy season, you been looking decent”.
Fans of Jean Dawson, Bakar, Dominic Fike, Teezo Touchdown, Injury Reserve, Amine, King Krule and Vince Staples will definitely be able to connect!
May Roze – Heal, and Mad (Music Videos)
Last week, we featured May Roze‘s epic new EP Heal, and now we have the video for the title track to experience, and the video for Mad! We are blown away by the London-based artist’s voice and work, and we know that fans of Banks and FKA Twigs would love her.
The visual for Heal is cinematic and May‘s plastic-submerged performance is exquisite and avant-guard. Heal is super engaging and we love the evolution of her delivery in the song, as she sings, “today, I wanna heal.”
We love the video for Mad which sees our protagonist in a straight jacket for the self directed and self edited visual, filmed by Zak Fenning. May’s performance is hypnotizing, emotive and ever jarring at times! We are obsessed!
Micah Thunder – Mama’s House
Rising Albuquerque artist, Micah Thunder has released a song about a mother-figure in their life. Speaking on the track, Micah says, “I owe so much to her. She had her own problems. I want to balance the good and the bad about this person. By letting her be a complete person, I hope to let other people accept themselves as well.”
The song was designed with music producer, Edgar Wonder and features live instrumentation and studio vocals. We love the brightness of the production and how Micah’s voice fuses seamlessly with the production. The depth of the harmonies, and intimacy of the track is poetic and emotive and holds a sense of nostalgic-futurism.
