Opening with a whirring synth and subliminal details, we are immediately enthralled by My Friend The Chimpanzee‘s latest release I Love This Place.
All songs by the My Friend The Chimpanzee, the Vienna duo consisting of Josef Umschaid (drums and fx) and Lukas Wieser (strings and synths) are inspired by literary works and philosophy. How genius.
I Love This Place is the cinematic second single from My Friend The Chimpanzee’s upcoming album. According to the rising artists, “the song is inspired by Jean-Paul Sartre’s play No Exit.”
They say, “Even though at times people turn earth into hell for each other, there is no place we’d rather be. The lyrics contrast our love for this world and all the beautiful things in it with the revulsion we feel for the violence and destruction caused by humans.”
I Love This Place is full of lyrical wisdom including introspective highlights such as “have you found a truth that you assume is out there?” and the poetic “I have found oblivion’s gentle touch”.
Working with a lot of analogue synths to create their alternate dimension, the Viennese creative pair cite influences including Absolute Beginner, Alphaville, Alt-J, Beastie Boys, Black Knights, John Frusciante, Moby, Modest Mouse, Nada Surf, Red Hot Chili Peppers, The Smiths, Tocotronic, Tycho, Vasco Rossi and Wyclef Jean.
We love the way they fuse genres, from synth pop to alternative rock and beyond and the attention to detail in the production is exquisite.
We have been immersing ourselves further in My Friend The Chimpanzee music and also love their track Time Traveller. I Love This Place is also featured on our New Music Spotlight playlist!
