Setting the tone with minimalist guitar and elegant soft vocals, Maya Yenn opens her single How Much Sadness Can You Swallow? with the lyrics, “There’s a humming when the dying lamp fades, and the sky burns on a sallow blistered blaze, I woke up alone in a darkened hall, filthy fingers followed out until the call…”
The music video, which was released today features Maya in a dimensional science fiction reality with bright rainbow eyes as she explores her surroundings in fencing uniform with her weapon. We love the cinematography and Maya’s performance. The levitation scene is outstanding!
Our protagonist continues her mission in the video, to arrive at a surreal experience at the end, which we won’t spoil, because you have to watch the video!
Speaking on her creative process, Maya says, “I wrote and directed the upcoming music video myself and it’s very much a love letter to sci-fi cinema. It follows the story of a woman hell-bent on ending an alien invasion as she sprints through the English countryside towards a crash-site where something strange has fallen to earth.”
How Much Sadness Can You Swallow? is a shimmering electronic-pop exploration of loss and self-blame and was originally written in response to a particularly disturbing nightmare that Maya had of “a vision of hell”. It has already been picked up by BBC Introducing (as Track of the Week).
We are hypnotized by the rising artist, and have been streaming this alongside her other single, tiptoe. How Much Sadness Can You Swallow? is also featured on our New Music Spotlight playlist!
