Setting the tone with a pulsing frequency, a vocal teaser akin to the starting of a car fused with enigmatic bouncing synths, revolutionary artist BC Roadz opens his single, D.D. with the statement, “alright Doso, let’s do that thing we’ve been working on” followed by the empowering, “you can do it, I know you can!”
As Doso replies robotically, “I have lost my mind”, the conceptual song expands into the story of BC Roadz’ life before he met Doso.
But who is Doso? According to BC Roadz, “I call Doso (pronounced DAW-SO) my cosmic robotic guru. I say guru because I don’t believe in human gurus., just loving ones that inspire creativity!”
We are in love with the high concept artistry exhibited by BC Roadz, and you might have read our last feature on the artist for his single, Comfort Blues.
BC Roadz has a unique narrative, now he might be singing about rapping to a sex worker from his previous life where the blues rapper left a $150,000 job and sold his home in May 2021 to pursue his passion.
BC has lived a very full life which has included homelessness, drug addiction, PTSD, bipolar and ketamine infusions, which all form part of his narrative, but what saved him was his 13 year old daughter, and music, of course.
Keeping it in the family and demonstrating a sense of authenticity, BC’s 13 year old daughter does the artwork for his songs!
BC’s music is recorded as a continuous story, and Doso has multiple designs, which “will continue to be re-imagined for every release”. Also, BC has a Doso tattoo on his forearm! How iconic and true to form!
D.D. was produced in BC’s apartment. The vocals and skit were recorded in three different studios, including MR. Denton’s studio and was mixed and mastered at Hiveminded studios with SLC MC Ronin.
As an artist, BC tells stories about human nature and failure because “that is what he knows”. We love his brand of chaotic humor.
D.D. is about BC having a complete car crash of a lifestyle and mind, and cosmic robot Doso came in to BC’s life to help channel that negativity into something greater and more productive.
When discussing his influences, BC cites an extensive list including Tyler the Creator, Jimi Hendrix, Miles Davis, Trent Reznor, John Fahey, Wu Tang, Gang Starr, Nirvana, Muddy Waters, KRS-One, Coltrane, Beastie Boys, Tool, Townes Van Zandt, Johnny Cash, Pink Floyd, MF Doom and Eminem.
Elaborating on Doso’s purpose, BC says “Most importantly of all, humans have agendas. Doso does not.”
We have been listening to BC Roadz’s wider discography including Comfort Blues, which we featured and Tn Mn, K St., and Stack$, and have added D.D. to our New Music Spotlight playlist!
