Setting the vibe with elegantly strummed and picked guitar and cinematic bass, Feralman opens his latest opus Golden Canary with luscious vocals singing, “You are, a Golden Canary, spend your days wishing you were free…”
The song tells the story of freedom and expansion. Understanding of regret and sadness are key themes in the song as Feralman delivers a narrative filled with wisdom and awareness.
We love the additional textured vocals in the choruses and the doubled drums are hypnotizing. The song breaks down with almost tribal chanting and mantra-esque “oohs” and “aahs”, before a stunning guitar reprise fused with elegant percussion.
Speaking on the creation process, Feralman says, “All of the tracks from my forthcoming album are told in metaphor and are mostly, inspirational uplifting stories about achieving, believing in yourself, making the most of life. This song is about what happens if you don’t, and let life slip you by. We only get one, I wish more people would act on their dreams, however ambitious or unrealistic they may seem.”
Golden Canary is designed to help people act upon their dreams. Speaking on the track, Feralman says he is “utilising a canary as a metaphor for the people who shout about what they want but fail to follow through, the song nods to the rich mining heritage of his home, South Wales.”
Discussing his favourite part of the track, Feralman refers to the miners’ bravery and hard work: “I really like the chanting section in the middle of the song on the full length album version. That is supposed to reflect the toil of the miners.”
We have been immersing ourselves in Feralman’s wider discography including Believe and We Shine, and Golden Canary has been added to our New Music Spotlight playlist!
