Setting the frequency with bird sounds and a whirring soundscape, Galactapus – the mysterious five-headed garage-prog outfit from Minneapolis have debuted their latest visual for Waking The Troll.
Set in an alternate reality with wigs, psychedelia and emotive performance from the group, Waking The Troll marks the fourth video from the critically acclaimed group’s album Intend To Stay.
Speaking on their creative process, Galactapus say that they focus “on producing music with a reason to exist”. Their fusion style in sound and video is alternative, yet cohesive and mind-opening.
Although a vocal group, they say that “their songs have no meaningful words”. We love their visually astounding aesthetic featured in the video. The group, who are anonymous, for now at least, have somewhat of an iconic sensibility, which is borough to life in the video for Waking The Troll which sets us on a fierce psychedelic adventure.
Speaking on their inspirations, Galactapus cites the esoteric and elemental, referencing “water, gravity, birds, wind and aluminium foil”. Galactapus members remain nameless and faceless by request, and for myriad reasons live appearances are presently impossible. Happily, they believe their music and mystique likely benefit from this discretion.
Expanding on the concept of Waking The Troll, the group says “[it] is about the feeling of home and the turn of the seasons. And the tranquility, the nostalgia, tumult and terror that pass with it all.”
We are obsessed with the chaos and arthouse horror frequency delivered by the outfit. Going deeper on the video, the band says “It’s impressionistic – layers of images crawling across each other to suggest feelings familiar and frightening.”
We have been immersing ourselves further in the work of Galactapus, and Waking The Troll has been added to our New Music Spotlight playlist!
