Setting the tone with a sharp riser and intriguing and evocative guitar fused with bells, along with the opening lyrics delivered in a raspy and enticing way, “I’m checkin’ out, out, now, now, ooh yeah, uh”… we are immediately hooked by Chris Caulfield‘s new single, Feelings.
The rising artist describes Feelings as “a smooth summer drive turned multi-car explosive wreck, just the feeling, the vibe, and it relates to how the song explores the concept of going numb when every pressure is crashing down.”
Some of our favourite lyrics in the song include, the conceptual opener “Abra Cadaver, cold within”, the poetic and visual, “on top of the heat, fire burns the skies, and all I still hope is the numbness dies”, the introspective, “uh, it’s embarrassing, how did it get to this” and the emotive and vulnerable “alone, locked in tidal waves, I’m weightless and floatin’ but still I sink, I’m fuckin just sick of just feeling strange…”
We love the vocal production, textures and the range that Chris Caulfield demonstrates, the question-answer elements to how the artist delivers the song is also iconic.
There is clearly a tonne of emotion, intellect and talent that Chris Caulfield has channelled into creating Feelings.
Speaking on his sonic landscape, Chris says, “My influences range a lot, which could be why my genre can be hard to pin down. Grew up listening to a lot of 90s alt rock and classics, David Bowie, Michael Jackson, Queen, Oasis, Radiohead, Tool, Incubus, then getting into more alt rock, heavy rock, Three Days Grace, Disturbed, Slipknot, 10 Years, Linkin Park, and then over the past many years been into hip-hop from JuiceWrld, Drake, J. Cole, MGK, Khalid, Joyner Lucas, Eminem, the list goes on.”
When discussing his creative process, the rising Canadian artist said, “The projects I’ve been working on lately have been under a working upcoming title of “Catharsis”, which kind of speaks to the theme. Having navigated a very difficult time in my life with anxiety and depression, I returned to music, organically, as an outlet, a release, catharsis.”
“Some songs focus on introspective storytelling, exploring some of these themes, while others aim to be more of a “dark energy” exploring hypothetical outcomes associated with my experiences as a means of release, exaggerating to “lean into the pain”, that kind of a concept.”
We have been immersing ourselves in the wider discography of Chris Caulfield, including AWOL and Stockholm Syndrome, and we are positively obsessed with the themes that the rising artist is navigating with his work.
Feelings is featured on our New Music Spotlight playlist and Chris has also just announced that Stonebridge, a Grammy-nominated EDM producer will be doing a remix of Feelings in the coming weeks!
