Setting the tone with elegantly strummed guitar and glistening bells, Normal Behaviour, who has already released two EPs this year (it’s only March, iconic!), opens his third EP with the track Egg Shells and the lyrics, “Treading on eggshells, making my way around this apartment…” which goes on to tell a story of how the artist doesn’t “want to be civlized”, but free and independent.
Speaking on the Egg Shells, Normal Behaviour says, “it is about being in a destructive relationship and how some days you struggle to be civil after the break up”.
The follow up track is called Embrace, with an introspective opening line, “does everybody feel like this?”, which Normal Behaviour describes as a song about “doing your best when times get hard”.
My God is the third track, which Normal Behaviour describes as a love song. It features the hook, “it’s been a long time coming, love renewed, firm and true, I found a home in you”, which is beautifully and emotive, and the delivery of the finale “my God you made me wait so long…” brings us to tears.
The final track, Palette Knife is about getting mixed up in the wrong things and missing out on the beauty in life until love finds you and helps you see more clearly. Love is always the answer. The bells and harmonies are enigmatic on Palette Knife, and we love the lyrics and concept that is, “life with love washes my palette clean”.
Speaking on the record as a whole, Normal Behaviour says, “The four tracks range in style, instrumentation and arrangement. It’s my most adventurous release to date and explores new beginnings, romance and how to address the past.”
He concludes, “Memento is a collection of songs with a clear message and the instrumentation is a solid statement of my sound.”
We feel the way emotions flow out cohesively from Normal Behaviour, and we have been immersing ourselves in all three albums that he has released this year. My God is also featured our New Music Spotlight playlist.
