Opening with the title of the track, alternative rock trio from Brighton, The Qwarks take us on an expansive journey of cerebral mayhem with the release of their single You Are Not Fans (You Are Our Friends).
A commentary on society, the music industry, social media, the concept of content, energy, space, time and everything in between, You Are Not Fans (You Are Our Friends) falls comedically and cerebrally in line with The Quark’s existing discography, but puts a focus on what really matters, the fans.
Speaking on the track, the trio says, “the culture is deteriorating and strange vibrations abound. Come on this psychedelic journey, cross dimensions and be sucked into spiralling vortexes of likes, influencers, self-help gurus, and content kings.”
However the band is offering a refreshing take, bringing up their thoughts on gender within the lyrics and the Mad Men marketing of the music industry.
Channelling frustration into art and comedy, the band, comprised of Phil Johnstone (guitars, vocals), Simon Young (bass) and Nick Flowers (drums) delivers punk vocals, guitar synth-based trumpets, citing influences including Deerhoof, Dead Kennedys, Black Midi, and Cardiacs.
The brand, whose debut album is literally called “The Qwarks Are Cancelled” (iconic), are fierce and to be reckoned with. You Are Not Fans (You Are Your Friends) is an ode to manifesting a loving connection with their fans and is the first step towards their second album of psychedelic rock which is currently being crafted, due for release this Summer.
The video, which is a trip in itself, was made by the Stuart Macleod of Stu Art Works, who has become a key member of The Qwarks family. Stop scrolling and hit play. You Are Not Fans (You Are Your Friends) is also featured on our New Music Spotlight playlist.
