Delivering a frequency and delivery not dissimilar to the iconic Nada Surf’s song Popular, narration style, with profound realisations and provocative material, the latest release by Hyattsvillain is Kids Don’t Buy Groceries.
On the track which fuses rock and electronica, Hyattsvillain recounts stories of parenting and how it influences what happens to their children. The artist exclaims “Kids don’t buy groceries! They are fat because of you!”
Granted there is a fine line between human optimisation and fatphobia, and what Hyattsvillain has chosen to highlight on Kids Don’t Buy Groceries is somewhat of a profound commentary on the state of the obesity epidemic.
According the Hyattsvillain:
“We were in the grocery store and this obese woman was carting around an obese toddler and filling the cart with soda’s, cookies, and the most unhealthy food in the whole place. We didn’t say anything in the moment so we wrote this song to lash out.”
The song is also accompanied by an animated video by Kevin Travers of Empire Animate which brings the story to life. The video shows Grady the clown giving a heated lecture at an elementary school to the children and their parents.
“Kid’s Don’t Buy Groceries” is the 4th release from “Short Songs for a Fast Life,” Hyattsvillain’s first full length album, due out Summer 2022 on Super Heavy Records. The drums are a hybrid of live and programmed drums from frequent collaborators, drummer Jon Jester and producer XIXI. It was recorded during the spring and summer of 2021 in Washington D.C., mixed by multi-platinum, GRAMMY Award-winning Andros Rodriguez (Joywave, Madonna, Santigold), and mastered by Alan Douches (Xiu Xiu, Motörhead, Thrice, Mastodon).
We have added the song to our New Music Spotlight playlist and are excited for what is still to come from the artist. In the meantime, you can stream their existing tracks below!
